Side Effects of IVC Filters Spur Lawsuits
Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filters are designed to stop blood clots from entering the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. About a quarter of a million are implanted in patients each year. However, there have been reports of pieces of the medical devices breaking off and causing death or other serious injuries in patients.
The C.R. Bardās IVC filters have been specifically identified as among those invoking concern. There are reports of fracturing and migration in patients with both the Recovery IVC filter and G2 IVC Filter System made by Bard (now a unit of Johnson & Johnson).
FDA Warnings and Recent Allegations
The FDA warned as far back as 2010 about side effects of the IVC filters including blood clots and organ perforation. In 2014, the FDA issued updated guidance about the appropriate use of the filters. Recently, an NBC report has exposed insider allegations that C.R. Bardās knew about problems with the safety of the device and forged a signature on the FDA application for clearance of the device.
