McEldrew Purtell was recognized in the Top 20 Wrongful Death Settlements in the United States in 2022 for the case Estate of Roberson vs. Covey. John J. Coyle and Daniel N. Purtell were awarded $7.5 Million to the Estate of Jemel Roberson aftering being wrongfully shot and killed by Midlothian Police Officer Ian Covey while responding to a shooting where Roberson worked as a security guard. Roberson was actively detaining the shooting suspect while on duty when he was shot and killed by the responding officer Covey even after being informed that Roberson was the security guard not the suspect.
